Recently a lot of progress has taken place in this field in both medical and surgical aspects, with the result that most cases are now fairly treatable.
The treatment modalities in rhematoid arthritis includes multimodal approach.
Medications are the backbone of treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The main drugs used in treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis are methotrexate, sulfasalazine, leflunomide, hydroxychloroquine and steroids.
Steroids are only used to control acute manifestations of the disease. Regular use of steroid medications is not advisable. Particularly in India we have seen so many patients been prescribed steroids by quacks labelling them as ayurvedic or homeopathic medications. This should be discouraged as much as possible. One should never consume a drug which has no ingredients marked on it. Overdose of steroids can lead to severe side effects.
Recent advances include the use of biological agents for treatment which are very effective.
